Acupuncture is one of the oldest and most commonly used forms of Traditional Chinese medicine. It has been in practice for at least 2,500 years. It continues to be a main stream medical treatment used by Chinese doctors. The classical theory for acupuncture was written in 400 B.C. and it continues to be the guiding theory today. Acupuncture is an empirical science that has been tested and sieved over many generations. Practicing acupuncture is like harvesting fruits from a 2500 years old tree.
The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued a consensus statement stating that: "acupuncture as a therapeutic intervention is practiced widely in the United States... and ... promising results have emerged showing the efficacy of acupuncture". World Health Organization (WHO) also recognizes the effectiveness of acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of health problems. Both NIH and WHO have published lists of some 40+ different health conditions for which acupuncture has been found to be an effective treatment.
Alternative medical treatment
Chinese medicine emphasizes the body’s overall well being. Instead off fighting a specific pathogen, it focuses on the conditions of the body, and devises treatments to help the body help itself. Chinese medical doctors stress the need to provide different treatment for people with different health conditions even when they may be fighting the same pathogen. It is also common for patients with different illness to receive the same treatment due to similar needs of their body. Chinese medicine tries to bring its patients to a balanced healthy state. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs are the tools oriental doctors use to do that.
While the conventional western medicine outshines traditional Chinese medicine in treating many severe illnesses such as stroke, heart-attack and infectious diseases; acupuncture and Chinese medicine do provide effective alternatives for many chronic conditions. For example, acupuncture treatment will help the body function without dependent on pain medications. Through acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine, we have helped many patients regain a healthier life.
